Moving 101-Your First Step to a Stress-Free Move
Moving to a new home is exciting — but we get it, it can feel overwhelming too. Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, a little preparation goes a long way. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to make your move smooth, simple, and (almost) stress-free.
Start Early, Stay Calm
The sooner you start planning, the easier everything will feel.
About 6–8 weeks before your move, start creating a checklist of tasks you’ll need to complete — like sorting through belongings, scheduling movers, and updating your address. Breaking the process into smaller steps makes it feel less intimidating and much more manageable.
Find the Right Movers
Choosing the right moving company makes all the difference.
Look for a team that’s licensed, insured, and has great customer reviews (like New York Nomads Moving LLC!). Make sure they offer transparent pricing and understand the emotional side of moving, not just the physical part. Don’t be afraid to ask questions — a good mover will always take the time to explain everything clearly.
Declutter Before You Pack
Moving is the perfect opportunity to lighten your load.
Go room by room and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or toss. Not only will you save time and money on packing and moving, but you’ll also start fresh in your new space without the clutter. Tip: if you haven’t used something in a year, it’s probably safe to let it go.
Pack Smart
Packing isn’t just about putting things in boxes — it’s about protecting your memories.
Use high-quality boxes and plenty of padding for fragile items. Label every box clearly by room and contents. Keep important documents, medications, and valuables with you rather than packing them with the rest of your belongings.
And don’t forget to pack a "First Night" box with essentials like clothes, toiletries, chargers, and snacks — trust us, you’ll thank yourself later!
Take Care of the Details
A few small tasks now can save you a lot of headaches later.
Be sure to update your address with the post office, your bank, subscriptions, and any other important contacts. Schedule utilities to be turned off at your old place and turned on at your new one.
If you have kids or pets, make arrangements to keep them comfortable and safe on moving day.
Prepare Emotionally, Too
Moving is a major life transition, and it’s normal to feel a mix of excitement, sadness, and even anxiety.
Give yourself time to process your emotions. Stay connected with friends and family, take breaks when you need them, and remember that it's okay to ask for help — whether it’s a friend packing up dishes or professional support through our #MovingThroughChange initiative with Olga, our licensed psychotherapist.
Welcome Home
When moving day finally arrives, take a deep breath — you’ve got this.
Trust your movers, stick to your checklist, and focus on the amazing new chapter you’re about to begin. Before you know it, you’ll be unpacked, settled in, and calling your new house “home.”
